New Year, New You

2012 is well underway, and like thousands of other Britons, you probably made a resolution going into the end of December 2011 that you wanted to keep.

So did your pledge make it onto the country’s Top 10 resolutions for 2012?

Britain’s Top 2012 Resolutions1

  1. Lose weight
  2. Get fit
  3. Eat more healthily
  4. Save money/spend less
  5. Get a new job
  6. Spend more time with people who matter
  7. Try new experiences
  8. Get out of a rut
  9. Visit a country you’ve never been to
  10. Read more

Now here’s the more important question – Have you stuck to your resolution? If so, fantastic! If not, don’t worry, because according to another recent survey 75% of people abandoned their New Year’s resolutions within just 10 days of 2012.2

This list of resolutions shows, and they rarely change year-on-year, is the importance we place on personal physical and emotional well-being. It’s clear that Britons are worried about their health, and are taking substantial steps to improve and secure it. This is particularly true around the issue of body confidence, and 50% of the most popular resolutions relate to this in some way.

There are a lot of steps you can take to build and enhance your confidence. While going to the gym in order to get fit and lose weight works for some, it doesn’t work for others. And you don’t have to feel that you need to change anything about your body type in order to feel good about yourself, but instead just utilise and enhance your assets in order to boost your confidence.

There are a whole host of companies, such as Triumph, elomi and Freya, that can provide supportive and sexy lingerie for all sizes and keep you up to date with current trends. You can find Triumph bras at isme.com. So if you’re looking for sportswear to help to tackle the New Year’s workout regime, or something to boost your confidence at home with your partner, they have something for you to help make 2012 a better year for you.

Create Stylish Throw Pillows From Old Clothes

Don’t throw out those worn-out jeans. Save that damaged cocktail dress. These are the hidden treasures that, combined with some old throw pillows, turn into stylish accents for your home. You can add style to a ho-hum room by simply pulling some old clothes out of your closet. All you need to pull off a low-cost throw pillow makeover are some basic tools:

- Old pillows
- Old clothes
- A cloth tape measure
- Old newspaper or tissue paper
- A sewing machine
- A properly sized sewing machine needle
- Matching thread
- Matching zipper

Before you start collecting your supplies, it’s a good idea to consider the look you want to create. What is the style of the room you are adding these accent pillows to? Formal, Victorian, country, sophisticated, rustic-each of these decorating schemes demand a different kind of accent.

Here are some tips for picking the right clothes for different decorating schemes:

Formal: Choose clothes that have sophisticated textures-silks, damasks, jacquards, velvets. Clothing designs that have simple, classic lines will make pillow covers that have the necessary elegance to fit within a formal living room or bedroom.

Victorian: Choose clothes with tucks, ruffles and/or lace. Plain silks and velvets are typical Victorian fabrics. Taffeta and chintz are also typical Victorian fabrics. Look for embroidery that uses silk thread. Victorian embroidery is usually glossy.

Country: Choose clothes in natural fabrics. Checks, plaids, solids and florals all fit well in a country theme. Ruffles are common and less delicate forms of lace are seen everywhere. Look for garments that combine these elements. And don’t overlook the potential of denim in all the many colors it comes in. Country embroidery is usually cotton or wool.

Sophisticated: Choose clothes with shiny finishes. Metallics, sequins, and leathers can all say cutting edge. These fabrics are sometimes more difficult to work with, but choosing the right sewing machine needle can make a major difference.

Rustic: Choose clothes that have an outdoors’ man feel. Tweeds, wools, coarse weaves, and suede support a rustic ambiance. Distressed leather and sweater knits also say rustic. Denim may fit into this look as well.

Once you have chosen the right clothes. The next step is to decide whether you want to use a zipper, overlap the fabric at the back of the pillow, or hand stitch the opening closed. I prefer using an invisible zipper for square and rectangular pillows, because it’s also a lot easier to figure measurements and I can wash the covers if necessary. I can also design my pillows to be viewed two ways. When I feel in the mood for the more decorative side, I can have that side facing out. When my mood changes, I can flip the pillow to a plain version.

Now, it’s time to take measurements. I take a cloth tape measure and measure the width and height of the throw pillow. I add one inch to each of these measurements. This provides 1/2-inch of ease all around, so the cover isn’t too tight. I like to make a paper pattern using old newspaper or tissue paper. That way I can divide the pattern into pieces.

It’s rare to find a garment that will let you cut out a square in one piece. This is where creativity comes in. If you divide your pattern into pieces, you can create a unique pillow cover that takes advantage of any special seams or design elements in the garment. For example, you can position a pocket somewhere on the pillow (even one that was hidden in the seam). The only rule that you must remember is that every edge of the pattern piece needs a seam allowance. I recommend that you add 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch. You can use notches to mark which pieces match each other.

You will need two faces for each pillow-front and back. Before you can assemble the pillow cover, you have to sew each face completely so it forms one square (or rectangle or circle). Now, using an invisible zipper foot, stitch one side of the zipper to the front piece, with the zipper to the side you want facing out. Then match the back piece so the zipper lines up properly and stitch the other side in place. Now you can stitch the two halves together. If you have any questions, look at the instructions for installing an invisible zipper in a garment. I find that if I start at the bottom of the zipper and stitch all the way around the pillow until I reach the zipper pull, I get good results. Just remember to leave the zipper open, or you will have trouble turning the cover right side out. Trim bulk out of the corners and turn right side out. Insert the pillow, zip, and you have a neat, stylish pillow that looks good from either side.

If you prefer to have an overlap on the back side of the pillow, make two copies of your pattern. Cut the second pattern in half. Add four inches along the cut edge. After you cut the fabric, fold two inches of the fabric to the wrong side on each piece. Stitch the raw edge in place. Now, overlap the two pieces so that they are the same size as the front piece. Sew together along the outside edges. Trim bulk out of the corners and turn right side out. Insert the pillow, and you have a stylish new accent pillow for almost no cost.

If you decided to stitch your pillow cover closed and use neither a zipper nor an overlap, place the front and back pieces together, right sides touching. Stitch around the outside edges, leaving an opening that is about 4-inches smaller than the pillow’s measurement on that edge. Trim out the bulky corners, turn right side out, and insert the pillow. Slip stitch the opening closed by hand.

There you have it. Stylish pillows that you would never find anywhere else. You will be the envy of all your friends.

The Window Treatment – Trends in Windows

Trends come and go in fashion, but one that’s common today is the trend in furnishings to mimic the trend in fashions. Window treatments are striking a familiar color chord and picking up the flavors of details found in clothing, from bold prints to color pairings. In all, windows are heading in some interesting directions that provide more choices for homeowners at better than ever prices.

The new black

Far from dull brown, the new black is brown. But this isn’t your grandmother’s brown; it’s rich, deep dark chocolate brown. Paired with blue, teal, mint green, orange or apricot (it just sounds delicious), brown is coming back onto the window scene in a strong way. Brown evokes the color of tree bark and nature itself, making it a comfortable and relaxing color that has a strong presence without being overbearing the way black sometimes can. Brown is friendly and it’s a color most men love.

Cues from nature

Another strong theme in window treatments continues to be the use of natural materials. This can range from bamboo curtain rods, to reed shades, even bamboo fabric home items. Bamboo fabrics are showing up in clothing and in home furnishing lines, such as towels, blankets and sheets. Wood elements are also showing up in decorative accessories and elements. To bring a current twist to window treatments, try adding a small border of hand-carved wooden beads. This may be all it takes to make a window topper or panel feel more current.

Bold and beautiful

Strong patterns with bold color are another window trend that’s coming into fashion. Taking a bold pattern into a panel doesn’t make much sense, though, because the folds of the panel will make the bold pattern disappear. To make the most of bold, bright patterns, apply the fabric to window shades set inside the window openings. These look especially good in rooms with little color or pattern going on because the strength of the pattern on the window really pops against the plain walls. Or, apply a bold or busy pattern on a cornice – another window treatment that’s coming back into fashion again. Cornices allow for a big punch of color and texture without becoming a deluge. Paired with simple panels, a brightly colored or bold patterned cornice will add real design zing to a dull window.

Touch of luxury

Texture is also a key design trend in window fashions and luxury fabrics stand at the front of the line. Many are looking for privacy and old-fashion movie theater drama in their home theaters and velvet is the perfect option. The rich opulence of velvet is hard to beat except by one fabric and that fabric is silk. Nothing says richness like silk. Why? The drape. Silk floats unlike any other fabric and has tremendous body without feeling heavy in the room. Top that with the luxuriant luster of silk, and silk has a combination that’s hard to beat. It also says you are a fan of quality that nothing is too good for your windows.

Affordable windows

Window treatments used to be hard to find and were very high priced even for so-called inexpensive lines. But with the Internet and online shopping, now even silk and velvet window treatments are available to consumers at prices that won’t cause financial hardship. Some good options for luxury curtains online includes halfpriceddrapes.com or Crate and Barrel (crateandbarrel.com). The consumer faces an ever-widening field of window treatment options and choices. It’s nice to know that these choices also range in price that also matches the wide variety of window treatment styles today.

Kitchen Improvement Trends in 2010-2011 With Modern Kitchen Appliances

When you are about to undertake a kitchen improvement project, one of the things you need to take care of is installing modern kitchen appliances. Old appliances bring down any kitchen and make it look old, boring and bland. Modern appliances for the kitchen, on the other hand, can take any kitchen to the next level and make it elegant, eco-friendly and extremely efficient.

Just go flip through various home decorating magazines and you will see the modern and ultra sleek appliances that grace the new kitchen displayed in the pictures. Manufacturers are constantly upgrading their appliances and are implementing new techniques and features that make them really efficient and ecological friendly. Also they make them friendlier on your budget in the long run.

The modern households should have high performance home appliances installed that take the work out of your fast paced life. These appliances are working quite fast nowadays and you no longer have to wait 10 minutes for one coffee to brew or hours until your clothes are washed and dry.

These utensils and gadgets also help greatly in preparing the home meals and cleaning the kitchen and home in general. Some families are known to choose restaurant grade appliances that work much faster and much more efficient than any household items will ever do. This is particularly useful when the family is rather large and the home is bigger as well.

If you are an environmentalist, there are eco-friendly appliances for the cooking area that you will love. They save electricity and also money for you. For example fridges used to demand a lot of energy before, while today they are ‘green’ and need hardly any electricity to run. The situation is the same with dishwashers and with cloths dryers. For example there are dishwashers that have 100% recyclable part, so if anything breaks down and needs replacing, the damaged item can be easily recycled into something useful again.

Another interesting trend nowadays is incorporating the appliances in kitchen units which effectively hide them with modern and sleek cabinets to offer your entirely cooking area a seamless, unified and modern look. There are many different styles, colors and finishes that you can choose to integrate easily with the rest of your kitchen furniture. For example you can find fridge drawers that are built-in directly in the kitchen island to offer you an easy access to the fridge and a modern look that would make any proud decorator proud.

All appliances need constant cleaning and maintenance.

Interior Design Trends For 2011

A new year has come and new trends are being set fast in all areas of our lives. A good way to start the new year afresh and with a new burst of energy is to change your interior design, but be careful as there are new rules for this year.

In 2011 trends in interior design will pay more attention to family and will show a high interest for preservation and ‘vintage’, as one of the first priorities will be saving money.

The present economic situation will make many of us become nostalgic about the old days. The so called “old colours” to remind us of the past will be among the most wanted design trends of this year. The earthy brown, the lime green or navy blue will find themselves both in it for colour, as well as trends in fabrics. What will fuel trends in 2011 will be the interest in ‘greening up’. Through the reuse of furniture by restoration, not only will you be saving money but you will also have a good feeling that you have contributed to protecting the environment.

This year even in interior design the attention will be headed for the origins. Because of human desire to relive the past, designers think that interest will be devoted to the origins of existence, so everybody will seek forms and colours with a global influence. African tribal grounds, or symbols of early Amerindians people will be used a lot, many geometric figures. For them to go well together vibrant colours should be used, but at the same time modest ones, as golden reflections with musk, tomato or oceanic blue.

As people will turn their attention to origins, they realise that the most important thing in life is not money. The economic crises will only give them the desire to simplify their lives. Various shades of grey and white will be the most neutral colours used this year; the grey will be used in a lots of combinations with other colours, as well as various shades of yellow, to bring a smudge of colour. You can also create sophisticated combinations, using glass, crystal or even gold or steel. These accessories must be illuminated by various sources, so as to create glow in the room.

One detail that you can’t forget are the colours and what they symbolise – as they must denote hope and optimism. Spring in nature symbolises birth and the colours of spring bring hope. Violet, orange mandarin, yellow and green may be used on fabrics. The floral motives with a retro aspect will still be appreciated, as more and more accessories for the interior design combine these colours.

Even if you can’t change your furniture every year, there are a few rules to be followed in the interior design or suggestions that you can take into account in a new round of shopping: vintage, etno, Scandinavian, home office, outdoor – indoor are only some of this year’s design trends. We’re still looking for a comfortable warmth in our homes, privacy but without forgetting the wide open spaces and bright, minimalistics lines.

Vintage : old restored furniture, romantic lines, complicated pieces of massive wood, decorative pieces to remind you of old times. This, a style loved by women, vintage pieces means more than ‘old’, it’s treasuring pieces from past generations, grandparents and great grandparents. Vintage style, both in clothes and furniture, involves pieces whose value and quality has remained untouched in time. But make sure that the vintage pieces you have or that you want to buy fit the style of your entire home.

Etno – heat, fireplace, the smell of spices – this is what this trend inspires. Regarding the interior decoration this trend is guided by the aesthetic “coloured” Orient: from India, Morocco, Central Asia, China, Russia. Explosion of colour, both on a white background and strong different contrasts: red, orange, yellow. However, if you aren’t a supporter of this etno style throughout, pick out a few items: coloured carpets, a lot of wood, natural shades and dim light to get the effect.

Outdoor – Indoor is a new, catchy trend for this year, that you will fall in love with if you are an outdoor person. From the desire of an intimate, warm area, one of trends imposed this year is bringing parts of outside, inside for those who would normally sit on the terrace or garden, bring the ambiance into the living- room. So you bring the ratan deep chairs, low, bamboo coffee tables and bulky, large plants inside. For a special effect allow light to enter by the large windows.

A new trend for this year is the chill Scandinavia. Surely we all love the minimalistic look with white pieces of furniture, romantic lines, that are extremely functional. This is more than a trend, it’s a way of living. Choose white furniture , walls painted white with colorful accessories thrown in; coloured pillows, nude soft carpet, boxes of different sizes, so you have somewhere to keep your magazines and DVDs.

Now that you have all the new trends, choose the one that best suits you, start this year with a new life in your own home!

Green Landscaping Trends For The Homeowner In 2011

The big buzz in home improvements over the past few years has been going green, and this trend is not going anywhere in the near future. How green something is considered, is now an important factor in most home-based choices. When buying a high-efficiency washing machine or energy-efficient windows, it is easy to know you are making a green improvement for your home. But what about landscaping, how do homeowners really know if they are making a positive environmental impact when it comes to landscaping?

Your best chance of making a net environmental gain with your green landscaping upgrade is by following the experts. Here are some of the green landscaping trends experts have identified for the year 2011. Most of which can be readily adapted for your backyard.

According to the Garden Writers Association, the prime garden trends for 2011 are:
-Gardening with a purpose
-Eco-scaping
-Sustainable containers
-Succulents
-Vertical gardening
-New urbanism

Unless you are planning to reclaim a vacant parking lot, or open an urban park, ‘New urbanism’ is probably best left to city planners. The rest of the items on the Garden Writers Association’s list are plenty achievable for the home landscaper or homeowner.

Eco-scaping, defined by the GWA as, “The move to de-lawn large tracks of turf and transform lawns into sustainable landscapes…” is a great way to improve the look of your yard in a sustainable way. Installing a living wall made up of green retaining wall blocks is a great way to replace stretches of grass with eco-friendly plants that will both beatify your yard and save water.

Filling the green retaining wall blocks of your living wall with succulents, another of the Garden Writers Association’s top trends for 2011, is your best bet to saving water over the long-term. Plants belonging to the succulent class retain water in their leaves, stems, and roots. Succulents thrive in a selection of conditions, and are considered by many to be some of the easiest plants to care for. Some recommended types of succulents to plant include members of the Euphorbioides family, Sedum sarmentosum, and Phedimus takesimensis.

Another trend identified by the GWA is that of sustainable containers. For smaller plants, this could mean something as easy and inexpensive as a reused food container. For bigger plants or blocks of plants, look to use containers made from recycled materials. As it turns out, while the building blocks of most living walls are made of poured concrete, those constructed from components that meet the criteria as green retaining wall blocks, should also contain a significant amount 100% recycled plastic.

Green has not just become a trend in home landscaping because it is seen as the popular or socially conscious thing to do. Both of these factors have led to the proliferation of green trends in landscaping; as seen in the examples above, green landscaping has become increasingly popular because it saves money in the long run. By choosing proven methods of green landscaping, your next outdoor home improvement project can reap rewards for years to come.
